Jan De Smedt, painter and sculptor
An expressive reality
Jan De Smedt (1905–1954) was a painter and sculptor, born in Mechelen. Whilst his art is certainly figurative, the expressive side of his work always gained the upper hand when he created images of reality. Emotion occupies a central place in his work. He painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes and a variety of seascapes, but it is in his sculptures that we see his true talent. The Raphaël De Smedt Fund, founded by the artist’s son, under the auspices of the King Baudouin Foundation, has as its objective to disseminate his work and make it better known.
