Jan De Smedt was above all and before everything else a family man. The warmth of the family home was always his priority, including in his work.

In 2005, one hundred years after his birth, a commemorative plaque was placed on the façade of Jan De Smedt’s house in Mechelen. The bronze statue of Jeannine, a young girl who often served as his model,  stands in a small square in the Varkensstraat, which has since been named Jan De Smedtplein. Jan’s studio was located on the Battelsesteenweg in Mechelen.

Jan De Smedt died young, when he was barely 49 years old.
